The death of Lazarus was probably one of the most hopeless moments that Mary and Martha had ever experienced. They knew he was sick and they prayed and even sent word to the Messiah that their brother was in need of his help. However, Jesus chose to wait and didn't immediately come to them upon their request. This is something that I can relate too as a believer that has face their share of difficult times. My family and I do our best to navigate through these difficult times....but there have been days where certain situations feel hopeless. We've called on Jesus and it just seems like that things will never change and the finality of our situation appears to be set in stone.
These moments strengthen their grip and slowly drain all hope for positive outcome...out of the situation...in the same way that Lazarus' sickness overcame him....but Jesus saw Lazarus' Death as a moment to reveal the death defying glory of God and the establishment of Mary and Martha's belief that the presence of Jesus can overcome death and the loss of hope. There are so many situations that we as believers face in on our own lives on a daily basis...and it appears that the fate of the situation has been sealed...like the tomb of Lazarus...but the compassionate...everlasting...death defying love of Christ is able to turn loss into gain....despair into hope...sorrow into joy...darkness into light....Our Savior is mighty and able to save....He specializes in life or death situations...and he Guarantees victory! So yes we will see our share of pain/frustration/despair in this life...but the power of Christ will never allow it to over take us....next time your down and out....command yourself (with the authority of Christ) to rise and walk....from death to life.
