Harsh Judgement?
After all that Moses had been through as the Lord's messenger, it might seem harsh that Moses lost his right to the promised land for striking the rock rather than just speaking to it. Perhaps, though, shouting at the people implying that he is bringing water from the rock expresses a lack of trust in God, and self-righteousness on the part of Moses. It’s easy to add our own twists on to God’s plan, taking it far enough away from the holiness of God that it becomes a bad idea.
