Mixing with manure

In order to be salt ... we sometimes have to mix with the manure of the world

During the first century, the people of Galilee used dome-shaped ovens made of hardened mud to cook. Women would use dried animal manure as fuel as there wasn’t much wood in the desert. They would mix in salt with the droppings because the chemical reaction made the fire burn brighter and hotter.

Over time, the salt would naturally lose its saltiness and would no longer have this affect, so it was thrown out. That’s why Jesus says in Luke that unsalty salt is not “fit … for the manure pile.”
