I have to agree with a previous note I read today. It is very refreshing to read this passage, and understand what's going on with Isaac. He had just lost his mother... and was out in the field meditating... I wonder what He was thinking about, talking to God about... then he saw the camels, and Rebekah.... married her, loved her, found comfort after his mom's death.
Yes, I think the intimacy between a man and a woman can bring comfort. God made it that way... but I think Rebekah had a sensible spirit, too.
The first thing we read about her shows that she was sensible to other's needs (water, water for camels). I can only imagine the crossroads in her heart, knowing she was marrying out of obedience (God was in this) but totally blind to what was ahead. She had never seen Isaac, ever. In less than 24 hrs she was going to the well for some water, and the next morning on the way to marry someone she'd never seen and far, far away from her immediate family (whom she'd probably never see again)...
I wonder what she talked to God about along the way... I wonder what questions she asked Abraham's servant about his master, and her fiance... I wonder which stories the servant told her, about the promises God's made to Abraham, his obedience to God, deliverance for Lot, willingness to sacrifice his son... I wonder which comforting words God spoke to Rebekah's heart, filtering her view to see Isaac through His eyes... How He made her sensible to his heart, in order to be able to immediately bring comfort to Isaac in spite of the circumstances (the unknown).
Dear Lord, give me a sensible spirit... to comfort and love. Amen.
