God's Second Best?

I am wondering if the stick Moses ended up using was actually God's second best?
It only comes into the picture after God has already told Moses what to say, which I reckon would have been enough.

There are a couple of things about the stick:
It was part of what kept him out of the Promised Land,after he struck the rock.
It was never passed on to Joshua,who led them into the land.

God has given us His Word.
We don't need any of the present day tokens, we have the Spirit of God and the Word of God.
All that is needed now is faith in God and obedience to His Word.
