Fly Perfume

This is a critical verse especially concerning leadership in the church. For far too long we have allowed the church to appoint leaders who measure up to the "important" eldership qualifications, such as being married to one woman, avoiding drunkessness, and the ability to teach (sometimes). But we are less urgent with other qualifications, such as temperant and self-controlled. As the writer of this text points out, a little folly in a person's life, no matter how wise or honorable, is equivalent to dead flies in fine perfume.
