What!? There's No Marriage In Heaven?

There will be no marriage in Heaven. This can be troublesome for us because marriage is such an important part of life on Earth. It’s how the world goes ‘round! It’s the closest of all human relationships. It provides for us a sense of identity in our family. It provides for us security in an insecure world. It’s hard to think of existing apart from this most important of all human relationships.

If we think about marriage the way Paul did, we can be helped. In Ephesians 5 Paul teaches about marriage but then ends, “This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church” (vs 32). Marriage in intended to illustrate our relationship with Jesus. While marriage may be the most important human relationship, spiritually it points us to intimacy with Christ. In Heaven that relationship will be a reality in full! Our life with Jesus will be the source of our identity and security and marriage will no longer be needed to illustrate it. We will be God’s children, kids of the resurrection! On a practical level, procreation won’t be needed in Heaven, so neither will marriage. (As an aside, it blows my mind that God involves us in His creative process! We learn much about God and our relationship with Him through that as well, if we’re paying attention.)

We are able to pursue this relationship with God now. He can be… needs to be… the center of our existence. He has given us His great and precious promises (2 Peter 1), His Spirit and His Word! God can be the source of our identity and security now. If He is, our marriages will be better and we won’t blink an eye that there won’t be marriage in Heaven.

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him”(1 Corinthians 2:9)

Lord Jesus, be the center of my life today. Thank you for the joy of considering Eternity with You!
