Lights and Lambs

One of the climactic announcements of Scripture is that the “Lamb is [new Jerusalem’s] lamp.” (Rev. 21:23) The preamble to this declaration affirms the irrelevance of the sun, moon and stars, but what does this really mean? I can’t help but wonder about living in a universe absent of these familiar cosmic illuminators.

The lights of this world create shadows wherever their beams are hindered. But the Light of the Lamb will face no such barrier. There will be no darkness, of course, but also, no shadows. No hidden cobwebs of pretense. No more ambiguity. No deception. No doubt.

The spreading of this Light indicates the absence of fear, insecurity and uncertainty. There will be no more secrets, hidden agendas or deceit. Openness, honesty, integrity and truth will prevail and bring with them the satisfaction of wholeness.
