Are You Listening?

"So Moses listened to his father-in-law and did all that he had said." (Exodus 18:24 NASB)

There are so many things that Moses did that serve as an inspiration to me. Here is one such example. Moses listened. He listened to that counsel of his Father-in-law and put that advice into action. You see, Moses wasn't so arrogant as to think he had it all figured out. In fact, he was quite the opposite. From the very beginning, Moses told God he wasn't the right guy and he didn't have what it takes to be the person God called him to be.

Contrast Moses' attitude with that of the Pharisees in Jesus' day:

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others." (Matthew 23:23 NASB)

The Pharisees had the outward appearance of religiosity, of following God. However, inwardly they were completely ignoring all of the things God held in high regard. They were the same kind of self-centered and self-righteous "church folks" that keep so many people away from our churches today. They read the word, but unlike Moses, they refused to listen.

Father God, help me to be more like Moses today. Help me to not be too arrogant or proud to listen to the counsel of others. Help me to admit that I don't have it all figured out, and to accept that as OK. Help me to live a life that is changed from the inside out because I am striving to hear your voice. Give me the courage and strength to put your words into action. Amen.
