Trust part 2
Recap from Part 1 about Trust:
Trust is a fundamental mechanism of creative order. It is the string that connects free-willing beings together and it is how God chose to reconnect with us.
The Old Testament is a covenant, a system of "trusts" that demonstrate how God began to reconnect with humanity- with a rhythm of entrusted direction followed by our obedient response.
God chose a strategy of promise, to reclaim what was lost to him.
The story opens with God reaching out to one man in the most sophisticated civilization of the time, and he tells him to leave it-"Go and I will Show" you. (Genesis 12)
HE OBEYS -Abram leaves at the age of 75 after his father dies and packs his possessions, as he was already very wealthy, takes his wipper-snapper nephew, his wife and leaves his home and enjoys a few initial adventures. (Genesis 12-13)
HE ENGAGES -Abram encounters a mysterious man who also trusts and speaks to the same God which he does and honors God, and the man (King Melchizedek) by leaving a tenth of his stuff with him, which he then receives a blessing from the king and his journey continues. (this makes sense when you read Genesis 12:3 as both men bless each other because they both have made the same promise to God).
HE TRUSTS - Genesis 15 is the beginning where God begins to reveal how he will make this unfruitful husband and wife the producers of many nations. We begin to see the divinity of Promise as simply God Trusting us to Trust him. The immediate outcome of this convenant was his continued right-standing with God (verse 6) as well as an elaboration that God would provide the land for him to possess. (verse 7)
HE DOUBTS - Sarah sets Abram up with her servant Hagar to provide him an heir, which results in the birth of Ishmael whose lineage remains heirs to Abraham's promise.
HE IS TESTED- In Genesis 17:15 God reiterates his initial promise to Abram to provide him with an heir, and specifies the time and that it would be a child of Sarah- by Genesis 22 Issac is already born and a young child, God asks Abram to sacrifice his son...
