"When he came to himself"

Does conversion start with knowing God; or does it start with understanding yourself?

This verse is the turning point in the story - the bottom of the curve, when the young son begins to pull out of the freefall - the exhilarating, adrenaline pumping, and then terrifying freefall - which he has been in from the moment he had that first conversation with his father.

And what is that turning point? Is it an understanding of the father and his love? Is it naming and claiming his birthright in heaven?

No. First he understands himself; he learns something about himself; he turns a corner and sees himself as he really is - alone, dirty, feeding pigs.

Only when he comes to himself can he start the journey of coming to the father.

Only when we look inside; understand what we know and what we don't; where we are strong and where we are weak; only after that can we see God.

May I invest more time in knowing myself - that I would come to myself and therefore better know Him who knows me even better than I do.
