The arrest warrant cancelled
Scripture
MSG
All sins forgiven,14 the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s Cross.
NLT
14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.
Observation
In this passage it gives a a visual picture of the work that Christ has done on the cross. In a very clear way it shows us that it's only in Christ's death on the cross that we are made alive in him and that our sins are forgiven. Specifically the passage from verse 14 demonstrates an arrest warrant (in the Message Version) being nailed to the cross, no longer valid, invalidated by Christ's work. I think of all the movies I have seen where the police are hunting the bad guys, where the arrest warrant is out and everyone is on the lookout for the assailant. Their face is being plaster over the 6 o'clock news, their picture also filling the newspapers. The airports are on the lookout, stopping the perpetrator from exiting the country. This is a picture of where we were at prior to our sins being wiped clean. The enemy would accuse us, label us and condemn us. Yet Christ came, he took that arrest warrant and cleared our name. We are free in Christ, no longer having to watch over our shoulder, no longer having to run away.
Application
It's so important that we recognise the work that Christ has done on the cross. So often we live as though we still have that arrest warrant out on us, but we are free, new Creations through Jesus Christ.
