How Big is a Weavers Beam?
I read this same term "Weavers Beam" when Elhanan killed Goliaths brother in 2 Samuel 21:19 and it got me thinking.
"Why did God include that detail?"
I mean, who really cares? Why is it important? What does it have to do with anything in context?
Well I got curious and posed a question to an orthodox Rabbi and he told me that would have been 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter.
Think about that. The spear was the same or larger diameter of the barrel end of a baseball bat and the spear head that topped it off was 15 pounds as well. Go grab a bat and hold it on the fat end and think about how huge and heavy this weapon would have been.
Put that all together and you get a good idea of how massive a being would have to be to throw and wield a spear like this. The detail makes the context of God including it obvious now. He wanted us to know that this being wasn't just a tall person he was a full on just shy of 10 ft. demonic hybrid AKA Nephilim.
Seemingly insignificant details reveal far more upon further inspection.
PS: When we visited Israel last year we drove through Gath and the valley this battle took place in and Israel has nothing there. No landmark, no visitors center, no Goliath Burger joint, nothing. Israel takes it's Biblical history for granted.
