Snakes and Doves!
The passage is often misunderstood. The interesting thing about this passage is the choice of the two animals, snakes while unpleasant are often timid creatures that shy away from conflict. In a church sense Pastors can be guilty of this attitude, in an effort to remain holy like a snake we flee from everything unless we are backed into a corner.
Doves though will fly anywhere, unaware of danger until they fly head first into it. Doves are surprisingly far more bold than snakes. To their downfall they are unaware of danger until they are actually in it.
Here lies the tensions learning the wisdom to avoid danger while still having the boldness to engage the world head on.
