The Widow's son raised from the dead - Sunday Sermon thoughts

Sunday we touched on Luke 7:11-17. The story of Jesus raising the widow's only son from the dead in Nain.

It would seem to me that the Holy Spirit would have to be working perfectly in sync with what the plan of God was on that day and most likely for the entire ministry of Jesus. Pastor Christor said that the walk from Capernum to Nain would be about a day and a half walk. Jesus would have had to left Capernum as soon as he healed the Centurion's servant in order to be in Nain on time for the funeral procession to be coming out of the city gates in Nain.

A few things caught me as striking in this story.

1) Jesus either transported himself and the disciples along with the crowd closer to Nain to be on time or He left as soon as He healed the Centurion's servant.

2) The Holy Spirit would have to be working very closely with Jesus to tell him to go to Nain in order to be there on time.

3) If I was the Centurion I would have had a party! I would be praising God and asking Jesus to stay with me when Jesus raised my servant from the dead!!! Christ must have incredible control and understanding of how to follow the Spirit's leading in order to not hang around if the Centurion did celebrate

I think the reason this miracle was so profound is that the widow (who clearly had no husband) losing her only son would have lost everything. Her health care would be gone, her financial support would be gone, her shelter, food and everything she would need to survive would be gone with her son. according to Jewish traditions at the time her son would have been her livelihood since she had no husband. So Jesus would have totally changed her life and saved her from certain hardship had he not arrived.

Also in this passage you see how the people reacted to Jesus' authority. I mean the whole funeral procession stopped when he started talking to the widow.

In Luke 7:13 it says that Jesus "had compassion on her" (the widow) and man alive that is good news that we have a God who has feelings for his people.

Another thing that caught my eye in Luke 7:13 is how Jesus said "Do not weep". Man I'd be so ticked off if someone told me not to cry at my grandma's funeral much less if my life depended on my son who was dead! I mean this woman lost everything and Jesus says to her "Do not weep"? Her world was turned upside down! But little did she now that her world would be turned right side up soon enough!

In Luke 7:14 I find it interesting how Jesus talks to the dead man like he was alive. I'd be thinking Jesus was crazy, the guy is dead, why are you talking to him like he's alive? I can just imagine the shock of the people who were around when Jesus performed this miracle!

Luke 7:17 is an profound verse. Many people believed in Jesus because of this miracle and are now in heaven. They may not have been saved if it wasn't for this event.

Well, these are my thoughts about this weeks sermon.

Praise God,
