Is God good only when things are going well for us?
While Job did not fall for this trap, it seems to me that the only reason satan could make this charge or prediction was because most people do, in fact, fall for this trap. It is not surprising that our natural tendency is to do that, but it is a very low level, you could say fleshly or animalistic response. It all hinges around the question if whether or not God has allowed freedom in the system He created. If there were no freedom, then of course however God made it happen would be how it happens. God could be "blamed" for everything - except for the fact that no one would have the freedom to blame Him, would they! So the very fact that people CAN blame God, or do a wide range of good or evil with their lives demonstrates that God does in fact allow freedom, and that He therefore does NOT directly control everything (although as is also demonstrated in this passage, nothing can happen without His consent). Since love without a choice cannot be love, the very existence of love necessitates the possibility of the existence of evil.
