Redemption or Death

For all the "gray" areas and questions people (including myself) have about life, there are still some things that are simply black or white. For the donkey here, God said to redeem the firstborn with a lamb (white) but if you won't redeem it, break it's neck and kill it (black). There is no in-between.

And it's the same with us. Apart from God, we are all asses. We are either redeemed by the lamb of God or we die in our natural, sinful state.
