The heart is wicked

I am surprised at how often I am surprised by the depth of wickedness of our hearts. Even those with the most pleasant of exteriors are capable of such vitriol and spite. I have heard said in political circles, "scratch a civil libertarian, find a fascist" -- this has parallels with glossy christian exteriors that hide the darker characters inside all of us.
