Sometimes I wonder how much noise is in my life. This passage helps. Like static on a radio station, we hear only part of the song.
It is sad how selfishly I live. No part of me naturally wants to comply with Paul's instruction here. My world seems completed the way it is. Hope today seems to rest on society's expectations, we dwell on the economy and our financial happiness. A job, a spouse, a home. Then we experience a lay off, a divorce and a foreclosure.
When life is good, who needs these? Who cares? What is faith for? What is hope for? And love? Isn't this passage for depressed people?
Yet I yearn to grasp what is proposed here. If I could live out the message even 10% of the time, life would be so different. I wonder if this is why these words were written.
