Making Room
I absolutely love the picture that this creates for us and our spiritual life...to not just wait for something to happen (like an old friend coming to stay) and react to it, but making room in preparation for what we know will likely come again. God comes to us often in so many different ways and those who follow Him respond to what He says and does. But the truly wise person is the one who recognizes that God is going to keep coming back to him/her and prepares space for Him to come and work in their lives. If we wait as the foolish virgins did for the bridegroom in one of Jesus' parables we may find ourselves unprepared for what God may have in store for us.
