A Holy Spirit powered food programme
Stephen is proably best known for his martydom. However these verses sell us the apostles were looking for someone who was well respected and full of the spirit and wisdom. Stephen was described as full of faith and the Holy Spirit, full of God's grace and power and that he was used for many amazing miracles and signs. Even the religous leaders of the day couldn't stand against his wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. He was one of those chosen to "run a food programme" (NLT). Wouldn't you have wanted to part of that ministry!
If you knew someone who could be described in that way you would probably be tempted to promote them as the "front man" but in fact Stephen was best serving in the community. We value those "on the stage" way more than those working in the background. But that's not God's way. The front line is peak of God's calling. Stephen found a way of integrating his social action (feeding the widows) with his Holy Spirit gifts, to bring God's grace and God's power wherever he went. A challenge to many of us.
Yes it cost him. It brought enough opposition to see him stoned to death. But Stephen knew his purpose was not to live a comfortable life but a life of glory to God.
