Our bodies are the temple of God, and we need to "glorify God in our bodies, and in our spirits" because they are God's. It doesn't work to abuse our bodies (e.g. alcohol, masturbation, drugs, tobacco, etc.) it would be like taking an axe to your church and knocking out all of the windows, doors, and turning the Sanctuary a muck. Would you do that? Maybe. But that that is the Lord's house, to be respected, reverenced, and treated with all honor. It's the same way with our bodies.
If you can recall, the Scribes and Pharisees turned the Lord's house into a den of thieves and robbers, merchants and sales people. Jesus came in and said, "It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer." If you notice here in Matthew 21:13 Jesus calls it "My house," but a couple of chapters later (chapter 23) after He says "woe unto you, hypocrites" etc. etc. He states this: "your house is left unto you desolate." It had been "His house," but no longer because the Scribes and Pharisees (and the Jews in general) had rejected Him, they had rejected the Truth that was in their presence for three years. From this point on, all was lost for the Jewish nation.
Our bodies are God's house, but if we abuse them the same will be said to us, "your house is left unto you...
"...desolate."
Oh how I do not want to hear these words spoken to me.
