The dividing of the land of Canaan to the Israelites....
Caleb goes to remind Joshua of a conversation that he and Joshua had with Moses about 45 years before. Caleb mentions how he was one of the spies who sought out Canaan, Caleb returned and spoke of what was put on his heart by God, yet his companions put fear in the heart of the Israelites.
Flash back: Numbers 13:27
Twelve spies (from the 12 tribes of Israel) go to spy out the land of Canaan. They return with the response that it is definitely the land of milk and honey... BUT a division arose. Ten spies claim there are giants in the land that are too big for the Israelites. Welp, Giants got real big, and God got real small, real fast.
**This is what gets me, here is a people who the Lord delivered from the mighty Egyptians, PARTED the Red Sea on behalf, PROMISED the land, and they DOUBT His power yet again. (how often do I find myself doing this? ...ouch)**
Two of the spies stood against the ten. Joshua and Caleb. Caleb spoke in Numbers 13:30 "We should by ALL MEANS go up and take possession of it for we shall surely overcome it" Caleb knew the POWER of God. Caleb continued to be obedient to the Lord; even when Israel came against he and Joshua to kill him. Why? Caleb and Joshua had a BIG God, and little giants.
This is what Caleb is reminding Joshua of now.
Why? Because, Caleb was granted first pick of the land. He reminded Joshua of how they stood against the persecution of the "chosen" people of Israel. Now, at age 85, Caleb still is not ready to settle down. You would think he wold pick the quiet senior citizens part of the land, if you will- however, he chose the domain in which the giants roamed.
V. 12 "It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the LORD said."
What a man of valor.
