Questions I have for verses Jn 6:1-4
1. It was the early spring about two years into Jesus’ ministry. Around this time it would be a pleasant 60-70F (15-21C). The sea of Tiberias and the Roman city of Tiberias are only mentioned here and in John 21. Why do you think that was? What purpose could that serve in the story? Keep in mind that the Passover is mentioned in verse four.
2. What kinds of motivations could the large crowd have had in following Jesus (v. 2)? [Note also 6:14 and 6:26]
3. Jesus sits down on the mountain with his disciples. Is this a reference to the event’s physical setting or could there be more meaning to it from John’s perspective? (see the implications from the notes below)
4. The Passover tells us about what time the event occurred. Was this just about the time of year or was John trying to tell us more about the story? If so, what? (see notes below and to the right)
5. Lag time on Jesus getting some private time with the disciples...how far ahead of the crowd was Jesus? What do you think of this news paper headline: “Healer escapes being trampled by needy crowd, flees to the mountains with close friends” Based on your answers to questions 1 to 4 how might you rewrite that headline?
