God's Kindness Leads Me To Repent
There's several things I note about this verse.
First it's nice to see something about God's kindness after all we've read about His judgment, perverted sin, etc. This verse is like a breath of fresh air, much needed by the reader!
Second, I just LOVE how Paul turns our thinking about what leads us to repentance on its head! Normally, and stereotypically, we think of "hellfire and brimstone" type of messages when we think of repentance. Or perhaps some guy on the street corner with a sandwich sign on urging everyone to repent or die!
Nothing like that here. Instead Paul points us to the fact that God's judgment and His wrath ARE His kindness to us! For they were pour out on Christ as He hung on the cross, therefore we can be free of all guilt, shame and sin!
When we see how kind God is to us, how willing He was to sacrifice His Son on our behalf, then our hearts are turned from sin to Him, and we can be saved.
Third, note that Paul talks about "the riches of his kindness." God's kindness, found in His grace that Jesus paid for on the cross, is limitless! He has more than enough to cover any and all people in any and all circumstances. So we can rejoice, for He can save and deliver no matter what the circumstance!
This too will lead us to repentance when we realize some of the length and breath and depth of God love and kindness for us!
