How often do we think we have a better plan than God's?

I found this interesting. When the angels came to take Lot and his family out of Sodom, they instructed him to flee to the mountains. He didn't want to do that though, thinking that the smaller town of Zoar would be a much nicer place to stay than up in the mountains. Evidently, Zoar appears that it may have been on God's fire and brimstone list, but He granted Lot's request and allowed him to stay there, and didn't destroy that city. But now, some unknown amount of time later, where do we see Lot? Yep, up in the mountains. Why? Because he was afraid to live in Zoar! There was a reason the angels told him to go to the mountains and not to Zoar; and there was a reason Zoar was on the hit list. God wasn't being mean or ignorant when He instructed them to go to the mountains. I wonder what sort of heart ache they might have all avoided had they gone up to the mountains in the first place, instead of questioning whether God had their best interests in mind. He did, after all, significantly go out of his way for them already to keep them from the harm that was coming to the people of Sodom.

May we take the hint, and remember that God loves us and wants the best for us, even when He asks us to do things that seem unpleasant. If we try to modify what He said to suit what we think we want or need, there is an extremely good chance that, even if God allows us to go our own way, we will end up regretting it.
