How ironic...
I am quite familiar with Samuel's version of this passage of scripture as it has become a common worship reference. In my understanding, David who was a man after God's own heart, declares, "No! I won't offer God a sacrifice that doesn't cost me anything!" Well said, David. He understood that worship demands a sacrifice of us. I still believe this is true either way. It is funny though that David's true motive (as per 1 Chronicles) was to turn away God's punishment as a result of a recent sin. Oops.
