Calling all musicians!

"Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise."

When I was learning to play music in church, I heard young and older Christians who were mentoring me at the time comment that it isn't necessary to push yourself to learn new material or practice until you get something right. As a young Christian and musician this didn't sound right to me (obviously) so when I questioned their thought process to them, they responded with "Just let the Lord lead you." I started studying the scriptures about music soon thereafter and found Psalm 33:2-3. Needless to say these folks weren't mentoring me anymore.

This has been many years ago and I have gained a great deal of experience since then and here is what I have learned. Practice is essential for any musician. Not to give earservice to anyone in particular but that God deserves our best in everything we do. "Play skillfully with a loud noise." Yes the annointing is absolutely necessary for the music to flow in a spirit-filled way, so prayer time is also necessary.

Were these people ignorant, lazy or what? Who knows... but as I praise God with my music I want it to be the best I can possibly play. If that requires a few extra hours practice to get a progression down or a few extra minutes in prayer to ask for that extra annointing, that's what I want to do. After all, it's all for God!
