God sees the heart
We often hear pop culture talk about "good people" going to heaven. But what makes a person "good" or "bad" can be difficult to define. This verse, however, shows us how it all works. It breaks it down into "good people", "good things" and "good stored up". Each of these three "good things" takes it to a new level. The first is the person, being a good person. This is what most people are concerned about. But the Bible takes it a step further, talking about the "good things" that makes these people good. A word of caution here: The Bible is not saying that it's our actions that make us good! This is the third step... "good stored up in their heart". Good actions are only a reflection of the goodness in the heart. The version concludes by summing it all up with "out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks". Ultimately, it is the condition of our heart that determines whether we are good or evil. God sees our heart and this is how he judges us. Not by our actions, not by what other people think about us... but by our hearts. And our hearts can only be made "good" through the redemption offered through Christ.
