Wisdom far removed
The simple point here is that wisdom is priceless. The lesson is in the irony; Rehoboam grew up at the feet of the wisest man who ever lived, and yet, his first major decision was so horrific it eventually led to the split of the kingdom.
One cannot help but wonder, even fleetingly, if Rehoboam's foolish thinking was a building consequence of his father's distancing from God towards the end of his reign.
Elders are there for a reason... for us to cherish and lean upon for advice and clarity. The only thing more precious than a seasoned adult is a seasoned adult with a love for God.
