Observation
Without God we are all fallen, and mankind is dirty and sinful. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. All we are is Dust in the Wind without God's saving work. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust. We all have dirty laundry, and have sinned. Why does God want to "save" the dirt, the soil of our hearts? What is His desire for us?
In this passage Jesus shares a parable and He says "How will you understand all the parables if you don't get this one?" This is the basic principle of the Kingdom of God on earth. Unless we are born of the seed of God's Word, we are not able to enter His Kingdom. This Word of God is living, incorruptible seed that is sown in the soil of our hearts and soul. It's an opportunity of a lifetime, and we don't deserve it - yet it's want God wants for us. He has a purpose for our lives - To have a relationship with Him AND to Produce a harvest for Him. We are not saved just so we can produce weeds or thorns or rocks or just keep being unproductive dirt. We are saved from perishing (being wasted and unused for our intended purpose, which is to bring glory to God). God isn't saving the old person I was, He is making me an entirely new creation! From dirt to the vine, now we can have an intimate relationship with God through our union with Christ, bear fruit and bring glory to God. Without the fruit bearing, we have no purpose on the vine.
Jesus gave us 3 examples of things in our heart and soul that could hinder God's saving work in our life:
1. Being unreceptive. God is giving us a free gift, but we must believe and receive it by faith. As soon as we doubt the message, we are not giving the seed a chance to take root.
2. Giving up too easy. God's Word comes with a fight of faith. It's not easy and there will be offense and persecution from those who don't know Him. We must allow the roots of God's Word to go deep enough and rely on Him for strength to fight.
3. Allowing other desires to get in the way. So many lures in life are traps to keep us from going wholeheartedly after God and giving Him our all. Desires to get rich and lusts to have more, distractions everywhere, worries and fears to provide and succeed - all of these choke our true purpose for living, and keep the seed of God's Word in us from growing and producing a rich harvest for God.
Application
Today I'm examining my heart...Am I being receptive to Him each day, staying connected? Am I willing to fight the fight of faith and face unbelievers who oppose me? Am I keeping God 1st in my life, as my number one desire - or are other desires creeping in above my desire for Him?
Prayer
"Lord, You are Awesome! Thank you for giving us so many chances and risking all for us. Help me to honor You and bring you glory. Keep me in Your presence, connected and filled with Your Spirit. Help me to stay armed for the spiritual battles and keep standing for You. Reveal to me any desires that are trying to creep in above my desire for You! Grow Your Words in me into a fruitful harvest that blesses many lives and wins many souls for Your Kingdom, and most of all help me to please You and bring You glory!" Amen.
