It's Not For Me
It is easy to slowly shift into a "I want to know more about the Bible for me. I want to know more about the mysteries of God for me. It's cool. It's interesting." However, from this passage it is clear that we read and study and grow in our faith - not for me - but to serve and help others.
For example...it is interesting and intriguing to study the end times. I enjoy thinking about it - the rapture, the tribulation, the second coming, when it all will happen, how it all will happen. I also enjoy reading and thinking through truths like the hypostatic union, free will, election, etc. It is cool. It is interesting.
BUT... I can't study all of that and search the scriptures just for me - just to put one more "cool" nugget into my brain. How will I use it to serve others? How will I use it to help others grow in their faith? It might be cool for me to pack into my brain all I can learn about the bowl & trumpet judgments - but how will that help me serve others? How will that help other Christians grow in their faith? And this is not about putting more facts into our brains. The next verse is clear that this is about action.
