David Regains Himself

David has spent the previous chapters being a horrible father and a weak leader. Although, demoting Joab seems harsh, it is a shrewd political move that can help restore the rift in his Kingdom. Joab gave solid leadership advice (in my opinion) in verses 5-7, but he was clearly set on destroying his enemies and not restoring the kingdom. David begins to gain some self confidence by demoting Joab. He also is confident enough in his place as king to accept Shimei's repentance.

This is a challenge for leaders to make the right decisions and not the easy ones. It would have been easier for David to simply let Joab crush his enemies, but this would have further divided the kingdom. David is finally regaining his sense of who God made him to be.
