Sign et, in His name
11 And the king said to Haman, The silver is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.
Haman had an evil scheme already growing in his heart when he went before the king to inform him of those who were such a "big threat" to his kingdom, the Jews. He didn't submit the fact that his pride had been hurt by Mordecai (a Jew) who had refused to bow down to him.
I think Haman's seemingly protective report was, to the king, a shot of emotional novocaine and momentarily numbed him of right thinking because he took and gave Haman his signet ring. The signet ring was used to stamp the hot wax that sealed letters in the name of the ring's owner, sealed with approval. So, Haman sealed his evil desires in the king's name.
Having read Esther before, we know what happens to Haman in the end. I can't help but notice this morning what it was that the king said at the end of verse 11 after having given his authority, "do with them as it seems good to you." I'm curious to know if the king would have given his ring (authority) having known Haman's intentions to have all the Jews killed came from selfish and prideful reasons.
Has not the king of the universe given us the authority to go and to do as it seems good "in His name"?
I am, humbled by and alerted to, the value and responsibility of being trusted with such a privilege.
I still have stinky thoughts and intentions at times and have to pray against self-seeking, pride, and evil schemes. What we do as Christians, we do in His name.
As much as it depends on me, I pray to always rightly represent the one who knows all things, the King of kings.
