I have now heard 3 takes on Cain's offering.

1) God needed an animal offering - Cain offered non-animal offering.

2) Abel's offering was first fruits while Cain's was simply "an offering of the fruit of the ground".

3) Cain's offering was not accepted because it was not offered in faith.

Response:

1) Law had not been given and they are offerings not sacrifices.

2) This is my impression when i read-seems to be the obvious literal view.

3) Heard this from Mark Driscoll (Mars Hill) - He had supporting verses from NewTest - will look up and post soon.
