It is such a solemn reminder to see God's attitude to sin for his nation of Israel. God and sin cannot occupy the same place, and while the command is simple, the call is great. Israel is to be set apart.
When justice is required judgement is swift. It reminds me that God's affection for Israel is both Affection and correction, which means we get spanked sometimes to realize how much God actually loves us.
