Striving After Wind

"Vanity of vanities! All is vanity"

We all go through this life trying to make a name for ourselves or attempting to fill our lives with everything that will make us "happy". We work pointlessly day after day trying to fulfill our American Dream only to find out that our big houses or our white picket fences amount to nothing in the end. That my friends is a life that has simply been wasted.

"All the rivers flow into the sea,
yet the seas is not full.
To the place where the rivers flow,
There they flow again."

Trying to fill our hearts day after day with everything the world has to offer we find that we are more empty than ever before. This says to me that we are filling our hearts with the wrong things. When we fill our hearts with everything except our Father, who loves us more than we could ever imagine, it is nothing but pointless. We are called to live for Him and Him alone, and not to do so would be futile.

"I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold all is vanity and striving after wind."

For me, this paints a word picture unlike any other. Can you catch the wind? No. So why do we still try? Why do we still try to catch something that we will never catch? Why do we try to fill ourselves with what society says will fill us, even when we ourselves know that it will eat us slowly from the inside-out?

God is the only thing that will ever fill our hearts. He won't leave us empty, and a life completely sold out to God is anything but pointless. This is what I desire for myself and for my brothers in Christ as well. Therefore, let us stop striving after wind, and let us choose today whom we will serve. Let us choose to be sold out. Let us choose to be used by our Father. Let us choose to be filled completely. He is willing and he is able.
