What was Cain's mark?

Some racists have postulated that the mark that God put on Cain, was to make his skin dark. I have also heard just the opposite, that the mark was to give him white skin. This would probably make some of the good ole boy "Bible scholars" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, roll over in their graves. I'm including a link to a Wikipedia article that, as we know, is not a source of definitive information, but it does bring together most of the interpretations of this subject, and provides footnotes with the original source material for them. It's a good resource for exploring the different views that are out there.
