Beginning of the Earth...Water

First there was nothing but darkness...then God created out of nothing a ball covered in water....uniform ...formless...waiting for God's hand to shape and mold...silly putty and my hand except covered in water that just stayed there before sun and moon existed. Had He already started it spinning? Is this when He invented gravity to hold the water in place?
