Why Sheepherders?

Why did God announce his glorious Messiah to a bunch of sheepherders? Before this he sent prophet after prophet, why now did he send his holy choir to tell these guys? I mean the Wise Men figured it out on their own, they read the stars and went to the King to find the Messiah. So why did God go to a bunch of hard scrabble, common herders who where ecking out an existence from the hilly landscape. Did God send his angels to these men because they knew what it meant to live a life of service? These men walked with their flock daily, sat up at night with them watching for wolves, they would bring their whole flock into their house if it was too cold. I believe that God sent the heavenly choir down to these men so that we would see how we are supposed to act in relation to the lives that we are charged with leading.
