Destruction of the Midianites
Whenever there is a natural disaster or a war of some sort, men always sacrifice themselves in order to save the women and the children. The reason for this is because if the men died then the women would still be able to nurture the children and the population will still carry on.
In this chapter we see God, (through Moses) ordering the killing of women who have slept with men. The killing of anyone especially women and children makes it hard for us to take in this account and translate this into today's world. But many of these Midianite women were the ones directly involved in the deception that led to thousands upon thousands of deaths; hence, they were reaping the punishment for their sins.
The virgins and young girls however were not tarnished in the same way they were seen as 'innocent' and to prevent them from becoming wayward they were taken into the care of the Isralites.
