The story of Simeon

Simeon's story always amazes me. God made a promise to Simeon, which, itself, is an amazing thing. But the promise itself was one of hope and redemption. All of the Jewish people had been, for thousands of years been anticipating the birth of the Messiah. The Holy Spirit told Simeon that he would see the Messiah. Imagine that! God told Simeon that his life would not end without having seen the savior of all creation! I get excited when I get tickets to a Jack Johnson concert and Jack isn't even close to saving all of creation. I imagine that Simeon was astounded and an emotional wreck when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple that day. I love how he prays after having seen Jesus. He starts off by establishing the fact that he recognizes that God is completely sovereign. He then tells God that he's all set and that he can now die happy because God fulfilled his promise to him.

What an amazing story. It's a small section of Luke but it perfectly exemplifies God's characteristics of promise-keeping and rewarding faithfulness. God chose Simeon, an otherwise unimportant man whose only claim to fame was being faithful to God through obedience. He wasn't some rich ruler, or important political figure. He was just a man who loved God and lived his life for Him. In God's book, that's an important dude.

This is just such a good story.
