Everlasting Contentment


Philippians 4:13 is quoted so often. You see it on bookmarks, posters, and hear it said by well-meaning loved ones. But I believe it loses some of its power when we do not consider the preceeding verses. Here Paul says:
10 I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you have been concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
Notice the end of vs 12: "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation."
Surely Paul, who had been imprisoned, beaten, a zealot, a well educated man, among other things, knew every up and down. Yet here he says the secret to contentment -- complete joy in the moment -- is to remember that all things are possibly through God. He could have said to lean on your great wisdom and knowledge. Hey, he could have said a lot of things here! There are many things we often choose to lean on when times are tough -- money, family, alcohol or drugs, even food -- but Paul reminds us that true and lasting contentment comes only through God and his divine power.
