What Practical Love!

This contribution is written to husbands:

Look closely at Jacob's love for Rachel. Jacob made an arrangement with Laban, his new-found love's father, to work for him for seven years. Then, Jacob would be given Rachel's hand in marriage. Jacob worked by the sweat of his brow for seven years and when the time came...Laban changed the plan. Laban gave Jacob Leah instead of Rachel. Jacob must have been so discouraged. Laban agreed to work another seven years for Rachel's hand in marriage, and he did.

Imagine the work Jacob had to endure to finally win Rachel's hand in marriage...

Rachel was a shepherdess...taking care of her father's sheep. We're not told of what Jacob had to do for Laban. But the scripture stresses "work". Jacob worked for Laban for fourteen years for his new-found love, and was with him for over twenty.

Men, what would you do for you wife? What love Jacob had for Rachel, and it was displayed in a practical way - by Jacob paying in sweat and probably blood for his love's hand in marriage.

When is the last time you told your lover, "I Love You!" When is the last time you kissed your lover (spouse) passionately? When is the last time you opened a door, did dishes or laundry? I sense a bit of tension building, eh?.

Practical love. What does that mean? Love that you can see and feel. This may mean missing out on that next new thing, so your lover can have... This may mean missing an episode of your favorite show to complete a task your lover has been asking you to do. This may mean going blocks out of your way to stop by the grocery store and pick up a few items, so your lover can have some time to themselves - to breathe.

Love is unselfish.

Let's go above and beyond ourselves to make our love for our lover so practical. Let's display our love for our lover in ways she can see. After all, isn't this an order from our Commander-In-Chief..."Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her"
