Reversal of Creation Order on Day 6 and Possible Significance for Relationships

In Gen 1, the chronology of the sixth day clearly depicts the creation of humanity as the crowning, final activity of God, after the creation of all animal life. In Gen 2, however, the man is created first and the animals are created afterward. Although Adam was a perfect being living in a perfect environment, he lacked "something"; namely, companionship. He was alone. The creation of animal life was enacted in order to increase his awareness of his uniqueness among created earth-bound creatures and so raise his sense of loneliness. It was in this context that God prepared him to receive the gift of the woman, Eve.

From the creation account it is clear to me, as other passages bear out (Proverbs 2:17; Malachi 2:14), the fundamental purpose of marriage is to provide for each partner's need for companionship, rather than procreation, security, protection, etc. If this be true, could this foundational account shed light on same-sex relationships or non-traditional commitments (living in a committed relationship/common-law marriage vs. legal marriage)?
