Are we really that different?

I hear people in church talk about how different men and women are. We each see the world differently, men are more visual, women more emotional. But doesn't Genesis 1:27 tell us that God created man in His image..."male and female he created them." So if Adam was created first then doesn't that mean that Adam is as much male as female. So are we really that different from one another, especially since Eve was created from Adam's rib. Did God really create men and women that differently? Or am I missing something here?
