Jesus - God with us
It is interesting that Matthew beings with a reference to Jesus' genealogy. This causes one to think that the story of Jesus is mere fiction but he was born to a family with a history. This also helps link the story of Jesus to the story of the Old Testament. In other words, the story of Jesus stepping into world history continues God's involvement with man kind, just on a more intimate level. Jesus at the end of this chapter is call Immanuel - God with us. God was no longer at a distance to mankind but chose to step into time, culture and have a human experience so that man could relate to him and ultimately find hope for our dire situation. Jesus is simply not a nice person that once lived but God-Man who chose to revolutionize history as we know it. This is the Jesus I follow - not a meek and mild but the God of the universe taking on the powers and principalities of this world to usher in an alternative to what mere humanity can offer!
