Am I calling others to become "fishers of men?"
A call to discipleship, this is the call of Jesus to a few who would become the original twelve disciples!
Let that sink in.
I myself am a Christian, as a Christian we call ourselves followers of Jesus. In this scripture Jesus tells Simon and Andrew, "Follow Me."
I have chosen to follow Jesus.
Jesus continues to tell these two fishermen, "follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men."
So there is something more that comes with following Jesus, the becoming "fishers of men." What does this mean? If I am a follower of Jesus, I am a type of fishermen, I am one who fishes for men. Why? Why fish for men? Why would Jesus want make me become a fisher of men?
Not to "take" life from men, but to "give" life to men. Essentially Jesus makes us the opposite of a fisherman. Where a fisherman catching fish seeks to take the life of the fish, the fisherman created through Jesus, fishing for men, seeks to give... life.
Jesus from the very beginning establishes the importance of discipleship through words but also through action. As He calls these two men to become fishers of men, He is also calling them to be His disciples. This is key later on when Jesus ascends and the disciples are now to take what they have experienced with Jesus to the world.
But how?
They already know how, Jesus showed them exactly what it meant to be a fisher of men, through His recruiting of the the twelve and furthermore through His own life. Something that Paul would return to in writing to Timothy, in 2 Timothy 2:2.
Jesus sets the foundation of discipleship, it is up to me and all other Christians to continue this discipleship unto "faithful men who will be able to teach others also."
