Whose covering?
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God they had to cover themselves. The shame of their actions made them realize that they were know uncovered. Before they disobeyed, Adam and Eve were under God's covering, but when they sinned they came under their own covering. The fig leaves that they sewed together were inadequate for their nakedness, even though God had seen them before and they had seen each other. God in His abundant mercy provides the first sacrifice for sin. He covers them with another life, showing that sin costs blood to be covered.
When Cain killed Abel because his sacrifice was not accepted God once again provides a covering in the face of grievous sin. God in His mercy puts a mark on Cain so that others will not kill him. Why does God provide these coverings to the already perverse mankind? Why does He choose to help when He has no obligation to? Why in the face of such an affront does the Lord choose not wrath but mercy?
Here at the beginning of The Story, God is showing His character. Here at the beginning of all mankind God chooses to cover sin. Here He shows His mercy and willingness to cover. All the coverings are costly, but they are God given for those who cannot help themselves.
Thank You God, that even in the midst of our sin You cover us. Thank You that Your mercy triumphs over judgment. You are slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness, and do not treat us as our sins deserve.
