Springing up into everlasting life.

John 4:13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

I like how Jesus describes this. This is no "should-do" religion. He is offering the gift of living water that will become in its receiver a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. I was reading an article this morning on WebMD, disbanning 6 myths about happiness. It made me aware of how many people are unhappy, and are relying on their genetics, choices, and circumstances for trying to reverse that. While writing in a gratitude journal, helping others, and exercising are all good things, for me this couldn't even come close to attaining the kind of happiness Jesus is offering here. I don't see yoga or any earthly relationship becoming a fountain of water within me, springing up into everlasting life.
Jesus spoke of food to eat of which you do not know. His life was filled with the Spirit of God, and satisfied in bringing others to His salvation. I believe that His comment to His disciples was also a challenge to come to "know" this kind of food... doing "the will of Him who sent Me." I think that the root of my discontentedness, unhappiness, often lies in not believing that I am walking in the will of God. But I have been offered this same gift of living water, and I need to seek to walk as Jesus did, in every word that comes from the mouth of God.
